"The Perfect Neighbor" is a completely, totally excellent soap opera that just finished its 20-episode run on Korean TV's SBS network (shown on TKC here). It stars my new #1 television/ movie crush of all-time, Doo-Na Bae — you too may have lost your heart to her as she shot arrows into a giant sewer monster in the awesome movie The Host. Or maybe it was when you saw her in Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, or when she played the exchange-student-turned-lead singer in the Japanese movie Linda Linda Linda. And she's a professional photographer and artist. Oh my goodness. She probably thinks the "Slip It In" demo was way better than the album version, too. Someone please translate her website for me. OK, back to the show. The story lines are bananas, way over-the-top with drama and emotion, but they're riveting, and the acting is so damned good and funny, and the subtitling is perfect. It makes you remember that real life is occasionally bananas, and way over-the-top dramatic and emotional. I laughed, I cried, and I continue trying to write fan letters in Korean, even though the program guide rarely corresponds to what's actually being shown on TKC. Tune in for "The Perfect Neighbor" at its scheduled time, and you just might catch Korean pro bowling, "Comedy Show Hey Hey Hey," "Surgeon Bong," "Ghost Pang Pang," "Super Viking," "Bare Feet Love," and tons of very persuasive commercials for plum-balls, brain medicine, royal jelly, the Hawaii Chair, and specialty flooring. This was the best show I saw all year. Available soon on DVD (there's only one season of it).
