Loved your Sounds of Science shows and CD (until mine was stolen along with 77 of my equally idiosyncratic cds. now I’m imagining what the petty thief makes of it). Leads me to wonder – when eating sea creatures, do y’all prefer them raw as in sushi, cooked as in chowder, or crunchy as in the bag o crispy dried clams and flattened squids I saw yesterday in the asian market?
Devon, Olympia WA
Great question! During our recent stay in Nashville, recording Summer Sun, while shopping in a Mexican specialty foods market, we found ourselves practically hypnotized by the dried head-on shrimp as snack food. We purchased a small bag, and then waited for just the right noshing moment to break it out. Perhaps they are an acquired taste, but they were not a big hit. Roger tried one and spit it out. Georgia wouldn’t even try one. I don’t think you’ll find a band member with a bad word to say about chowder, be it Manhattan, New England or even la bouillabaisse. But I would have to say that as a group, though loath to display favoritism, we prefer our fish raw–sushi, absolutely, but also your oysters or your clams on the half shell, as well as some of your popular marinated raw fish concoctions, be it crudo or ceviche.
Where would I find a good chicken shawarma sandwich in Hoboken?
While you’re at it, where does one go for a well-made Bloody Mary?
If you’re tee-totalling vegetarians, could you at least ask around?
Dave, Detroit MI
Although there is not a vegetarian or a teetotaller within the orchestra, none of us felt qualified to answer your questions with the proper expertise. With that in mind, we consulted noted epicurean, Lisa Chernick, and solicited her thoughts. She replied:
I think it’s safe to say that Hoboken probably does not have an outstanding chicken shawarma to offer, so Mr. Bierman won’t be missing anything if he should order the first one he finds!
As for the Bloody Mary, I would say if you like straw hats and running the risk of someone vomiting on your shoes, it’s hard to beat Bahama Mama’s. Enjoy your visit!
