Like the They Shoot, We Score compilation, it's comprised entirely of instrumentals, and lots of them, most on the short side (24 tracks in 36 minutes). And as such, this is hardly a record for everyone — even at YLT hq we distinguish between this and our "real records." But that said, we've worked hard on these soundtracks, and never more so than on Adventureland. It's very different from anything else we do: we're attempting to do the bidding of someone other than the three of us; we're trying to move with the rhythm of the scene, while staying out of the way of the dialogue; and we're working a lot faster than usual. Which ends up sounding not all that much like even the instrumentals on our other records, not even The Sounds of the Sounds of Science. It wasn't easy to be able to offer this lp. I don't know if you've noticed, but Walt Disney (the studio behind Miramax, who released Adventureland), tend to be rather proprietary about what they consider their stuff. After protracted negotiations, we carved out the right to release our music on vinyl only. It wasn't our idea, so please direct any requests for a digital version to Chris Berman or Lady and/or the Tramp or someone else in the Disney orbit. The CD contains the entire score written and performed by the band to accompany eight legendary but rarely-seen undersea documentary shorts by influential French avant-garde filmmaker Jean Painlevé. Yo La Tengo's score, which originally debuted on stage at the San Francisco Film Festival in April 2001 with the band providing live accompaniment to the films, echoes the films' haunting surrealist imagery, yet the music is equally evocative on its own, from the dreamy soundscapes of  "Sea Urchins"  and "How Some Jellyfish Are Born" to the harsher, more dissonant moods of "Liquid Crystals" and "The Love Life of The Octopus."  In September 2001, the group headed into a Nashville studio and laid down the complete score with longtime producer Roger Moutenot. The resulting album also features vibrant cover photos from the films, along with ominous and comforting illustrations by Jim Woodring and Jad Fair.
